JBStansel's Blog: Gate Cottage Burns Down

  • Keith Wilson · 11 months ago
Jason, My Name is Keith Wilson. I graduated with a degree in Pastoral Ministry in 2007 from TFC. That is some good video of the fire. However, I do have a few comments. I am now a Class A Interior Fire Fighter for Speculator Fire Department. I must say that had my company been the responding company in command of the Gate Cottage fire you would have never been allowed that close to the fire. Just a suggestion, but if you are not wearing PPE (the yellow bunker gear the fire fighters were wearing) you could easily be seriously injured at even a routine fire such as Gate Cottage. Far too often spectators are hurt or killed by unexpected sudden changes in the unstable conditions of a fire. Propane tanks blow-up, backdrafts create negative inner pressure which spark flash-overs, and buildings collapse unexpectedly. I respectfully understand your curiosity, and appreciate the video. Nonetheless, as a fellow fire fighter, I would encourage you to honor the firefighters requests (who are risking their own injury for the safety of others) even if you do not see the inherant risk involved.
    Thanks, Keith Wilson

What was done is done, even if it was wrong or not. You know you would have done the exact same thing if you had the resources to do it!

Yeah I totally understand, but I even talked with a firefighter for a couple seconds and there were several civilians walking around where I was so I don't guess they saw a threat but thanks for the concern.

I graduated in 1996. Thanks for getting all this video. It's so sad to see it but at least in some way I feel closer to the event. We were married by the Falls. I feel terrible for everyone there, esp those who lost so much in that building, be it papers or jobs.
  • jbstansel · 11 months ago
Yeah...I'm sure the professors had a lot of personal things in their offices and you can tell the whole building was destroyed.

Evan and Ashley Warden posted this on my facebook, I attended Toccoa with them. I went to Toccoa a while ago but that building meant a lot to all of us, so many of us had some special memories there. Thanks for your awesome blog work, we are praying for Toccoa Falls College and the students and faculty there.

Thanks for the prayers...I ran into a few of my Counseling/Psych professors today on campus and they were looking around at options for office and classroom space on campus. Those guys lost a lot!
